'Amazing' response to school's prom outfit plea

Date published: 14 June 2023

An Oldham secondary school's prom date next week is now sure to prove a massive and memorable hit after staff and the local community donated outfits and accessories to pupils whose families have been hard hit by the cost of living crisis.

Oasis Academy Oldham Cover Supervisor Louise Skeffington had the original idea to appeal for donations of prom dresses and suits on Facebook ahead of the big date on June 22.

That was in May, with Louise highlighting that donations would be most welcome due to the costs of prom outfits and accessories.

With pupils determined to end their high school and GCSE exam journey in some style, donations have since flooded in, to the point where Louise has been overwhelmed (as our pictures indicate).

Louise's colleague at the school, Debra Martin, said: "Following on from our plea for prom dresses, we have had such an amazing response.

"We have an amazing and generous community and staff who have donated prom dresses, suits, shoes, handbags and other accessories."

A school Tweet read: "We have been so lucky to have had so many generous donations from our amazing community.

"Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to contact or come into the Academy to donate some fabulous outfits and accessories."

Meanwhile, Zara Obeng, the Assistant Principal for Inclusion at Oasis Academy Oldham, added: "I work at the best school with the best people in the world!

"Between June 8 and 12 we had a pop up prom shop so our pupils could come and pick outfits for the prom.

"We were in tears watching pupils pick out their perfect outfits."
