Injuries are falling on Oldham’s roads - but councillor encourages residents to do more to make them even safer

Oldham's roads are getting safer for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, according to new Transport for Greater Manchester figures.

Last year, the number of incidents, which resulted in someone reporting they had been injured, decreased by 36 per cent compared to the previous 12 months.

The figures, released by TfGM, show that the number of incidents has fallen from 336 to 214 – the best annual reduction across Greater Manchester.

Councillor Chris Goodwin, Oldham Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Figures that show fewer people are being injured on our roads are always welcome.

“The safety of road users is a priority for the council, and our partners, and that’s why it’s a key part of our Transport plan for the coming years.

“We are looking to create a road network that supports motorists while at the same time promotes walking and cycling as a safe way to get about.”

The council is introducing a number of road safety measures across the borough.

These include the first School Street, designed to improved conditions for young people and families around schools during drop off and pick up times.

More primary schools are set to introduce similar schemes over the coming months.

TfGM have also started a scheme that will see the replacement of all the existing speed safety cameras within the borough.

And late last year, the council accepted funding of more than £650,000 from the Greater Manchester Mayor's Cycling and Walking Challenge Fund to install four new crossings at sites across the borough.

Cllr Goodwin added: “Unfortunately, there will always be collisions and accidents, and sadly there is no getting away from that.

"Our officers continue to monitor our roads and will take action, including putting new safety measures in place if they are needed.

“Everyone has a responsibility to reduce accidents on our roads.

"So, if you are  driving a vehicle, keep to the speed limit and drive responsibly making sure you are aware of other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians at all times.”
