Werneth Primary School celebrates School Games award success

Date published: 28 July 2023

Werneth Primary School has received the School Games Silver Award.

The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress.

A Werneth Primary spokespeerson said: "This is an amazing achievement for pupils as, pre-covid, our school did not attend many inter-school sporting events or competitions.

"We are so proud of our fantastic sporting offer for pupils where a range of extra-curricular activities are available after school.

"These activities support our formal curriculum and give pupils the opportunity to extend their knowledge and understanding, as well as taking part in sporting activities and competitions."

Werneth Primary figures indicate that 646 places were taken to participate in 37 after school sports clubs during 2022-23.

Then 200 Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) eligible participants attended one or more after-school sports clubs and 84 SEND participants attended one or more after-school sports club activities, while there were 276 participants at 28 different inter-school sport events, 86 PPG eligible participants at 28 different inter-school sport events and 20 SEND participants at 28 different inter-school sport events.

The spokesperson added: "A special thank you to Oldham Athletic Community Trust and our Pinnacle Learning Trust partners, Hathershaw College, for providing after school clubs, a range of tournaments, lots of inter-school sports competitions and events.

"We are proud of our students for embodying our core values of Care, Aspire and Persevere."
