Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams marked World Alzheimer’s Day yesterday (Thursday) with a couple of notable events.

As part of her role as a Member of Parliament, Ms Abrahams also serves as the Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia.

Ms Abrahams cared for her mother Angela, who had Alzheimer’s Disease, and has sought to use her position as a Member of Parliament to help other families and carers experiencing a similar situation.

In order to mark World Alzheimer’s Day, Ms Abrahams took part in a Webicast in which she explained her Parliamentary work on influencing the Government to do more on Dementia, particularly as part of their Major Conditions Strategy.

In addition to this, Ms Abrahams delivered a keynote address to the Admiral Nurses Conference in which she thanked the nurses for the “care, compassion and dignity” they give to people with dementia and their families, and calling for greater action on diagnosis, social care reform and research.

As part of her Dementia Friendly Oldham campaign, next Saturday (September 30) at 11am, Ms Abrahams will be holding her fifth Annual Memory Walk in Alexandra Park in order to raise awareness about, and support those affected by Dementia.

Ms Abrahams said: “On World Alzheimer’s Day I want to reaffirm my efforts, as your Member of Parliament, to continue to campaign for greater awareness, especially around early diagnosis and the urgent need for social care reform.

"I am very proud of the work that we have done here in Oldham to become a dementia friendly community, but there is still more work to be done.

"As such, I want to invite the community to join me for my fifth Annual Memory Walk in Alexandra Park next weekend.”
