Sinfield's latest challenge raises over £1m for MND charities

Date published: 18 December 2023

The fundraising following Oldham hero Kevin Sinfield's 7 in 7 in 7 Challenge has smashed through the £1million barrier after what has been amazing support from the public in just over a week since the former Leeds Rhinos skipper completed his latest efforts in London.

At the time of writing, the total raised stood at £1,039,288.69.

Sinfield, currently England’s rugby union defence coach, and his team have now raised over £8 million to help support his great pal and former rugby team-mate Rob Burrow and the Motor Neurone Disease community.

Sinfield and the team had already completed three gruelling challenges in aid of his long-time friend Burrow, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2019.

They went even bigger this time around, however, combining elements from all three of the previous instalments by running seven ultramarathons in seven days across seven different cities in the UK and Ireland.

Between December 1, 2023 and December 7, 2023, after starting in Leeds, Sinfield and the team also ran through Cardiff, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Dublin, Brighton and London.

The 7 in 7 in 7 Challenge will support five charities which support and care for people affected by MND and their families, and invest in research to bring us closer to effective treatments and a cure for the disease.

The main beneficiaries will be the MND Association and Leeds Hospitals Charity’s appeal to build the Rob Burrow Centre for MND in Leeds.

However, there will also be donations to My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, the Irish MND Association and the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation plus support for the 4ED campaign to support former Gloucester and Leicester Rugby Union player Ed Slater.

Meanwhile, it has been reported over the weekend that Sinfield and Burrow are set to be honoured by the King in the new year following their campaigning for those living with motor neurone disease.

The pair, who have captured the hearts of a nation, are reportedly set to receive CBEs in the New Year's Honours List after collectively raising millions to help find a cure.
