Chadderton is about to get a whole new street of affordable homes

Plans to build an entire street of affordable homes in Chadderton were officially signed off today (Friday). 

Forty-two new red-brick houses are due to be built on three acres of land north of Foxdenton Lane. 

Developers Stonebond Properties and Great Places Housing Group submitted the plans as a part of an ongoing and large-scale redevelopment scheme for the area. 

The Foxdenton strategic site plan aims to create 500 new homes in the area to help meet the soaring demand for housing in Oldham. 

Including the 42 signed off today, 436 homes have been approved for construction so far. 

The latest phase of the plan will see a whole cul-de-sac built, connecting to a previous development currently under construction by the firm. 

The developers said their aim is to “[create] attractive, active and lively streets” on the undeveloped land. 

The plot backs onto the Newman Catholic College playing fields and is currently used as a field for horse grazing.

The new homes will be a mix of two-story detached and semi-detached houses and short mews arranged in a mostly self-contained U-shape. 

Nine of the new-builds will have two-bedrooms, 29 will have three-bedrooms and four of them will be four-bedroom homes. 

According to the plans, the houses will be sold on a shared ownership basis, meaning potential residents can buy between 10 percent and 75pc worth of the house, and rent the remainder of the property until they can afford to buy the rest. 

The project will also involve building the road leading up to the houses, along with pedestrian and cycle access. 

The proposal was originally submitted in August 2023 and discussed at a planning meeting on December 20. 

Four objections were raised concerning traffic, antisocial behaviour and an issue about ecological survey data raised by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, but the proposal was ultimately approved with conditions. 

Now the proposal has been officially signed off, the developers will now have to start building the new homes within the next three years or risk losing the approval.
