Manchester Street reopens following 'concern for welfare' incident

Date published: 26 January 2024

Part of a main road in Oldham is now open again after it was cordoned off by police earlier this morning following a 'concern for welfare' incident.

Part of Manchester Street near the town centre was closed, causing major rush hour traffic delays.

The westbound side was reportedly shut between Oldham Way and Windsor Road.

Officers were on the scene this morning, with a bus stop cordoned off. That tape has now been removed.

Traffic was diverted away from the area, with some bus services also on a diversion route.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said a man was taken to hospital with a head injury.

His condition is still 'unknown' at this stage.

The spokesperson said: "At around 6.30am on Monday 29 January 2024, officers were called to reports of a concern for welfare of a man on Windsor Road in Oldham.

"A man was taken to hospital with an injury to his head, where his condition remains unknown.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Meanwhile, Ashton Road in Oldham was cordoned off yesterday evening (Sunday) following reports of a person being struck by a car.

Police and paramedics raced to the scene on Ashton Road (A627) at around 6pm.

A large cordon was erected with officers conducting investigations into the night.

It is understood a pedestrian was hit while crossing the main road beside the junction with Goddard Street.

A witness reported seeing a person sitting in the road in front of the vehicle shortly before an ambulance arrived.
