There are sure to be plenty of tears on Sunday, June 2 at St Anne's Rugby Club when one of Oldham's great music and literary characters brings the curtain down on a 30-plus-year career.

Carl H Spiers is one of the most recognisable faces on the Oldham circuit - and has been for years.

However, the locally-based respected DJ, promoter and prolific author has decided - at the age of 63 - to call it a day.

To mark the occasion, Carl announced a farewell bash at St Anne's in June, and tickets sold out in just THREE days.

There won't be a spare seat in the house, with emotions set to run high.

Carl told the Chronicle: "Well, what a roller coaster it's been for me.

"My Djing career has been just amazing.

"Looking back, I sold out some great places in years gone by, including Baileys/Romeo's, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Candlelight, Scandalls, the Pennine Lounge and of course Monty's.

"I've worked at more than 200 pubs and clubs, and there's been plenty of highlights.

"The best night was probably selling 1,050 tickets for one particular show.

"That paid for a trip to New York for my son's 14th birthday!"

Proud Oldhamer Carl, a lifelong Latics fanatic, attended Grange School in Oldham.

His DJ and promoting career began way back in July, 1992, with a night at the former Brook Tavern close to the town centre.

He has written FIFTEEN books too - the last one being 'Oldham - tough town, tough people' in 2019.

The St Anne's show on June 2 is set to feature three guest DJs spinning tunes between 1 and 4pm, then Carl will take over on the decks for the final three hours until 7pm.

Carl said in a Facebook post: "No requests. I'm working on my play list.

"Every song I play will mean something to me and hopefully will be appreciated by all those attending.

"I will fill the dance floor as well as the aisles and the bar area.

"It will be an incredible atmosphere as some of the best known and respected faces in town will be there, plus fifty from Bolton and a few more travelling in.

"It will be filmed and I'm booking a professional photographer to record this historic event in Oldham's entertaining scene."
