Firearms removed from the streets as ten arrested in crime crackdown

Date published: 06 March 2024

Four firearms have been taken off the streets as ten people were arrested in a crime crackdown in North Manchester.

The arrests come after officers from Greater Manchester Police’s City of Manchester Challenger team, a specialist team targeting serious and organised criminality, conducted an early morning warrant in Aked Close, Manchester.

Upon entering the property, officers located and seized four firearms and ammunition from within the house.

Six males between the ages of 14 and 57 and four women between ages of 20 and 52 were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

They all remain in custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Chris Woodburn, of GMP’s City of Manchester Challenger team, said: "Firearms have no place on our streets and our team are robust in their response to stamping out this type of crime ensuring the public are safe and also feel safe.

“These four firearms have now been taken out of circulation, preventing them from potentially being used to cause serious harm in our communities.

“Although we have made ten arrests, our work is ongoing to disrupt serious crime across Greater Manchester but we need your help.

“We continue to act on information that is provided to us from the public so that we are one step ahead of organised crime and we will remain relentless in our pursuit of people who we suspect of being involved in it.

“In order for us to act, we need you and your community to let us know of any concerns you have and we urge you to please get in touch with us if you believe crime is taking place in your area.”

If you have information, please call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or contact GMP via 101.

Always dial 999 in an emergency.

Meanwhile, police officers responded to reports of an injured male outside an address on Forber Crescent in Gorton at around 6.30pm on Tuesday evening, and upon attending a 16-year-old boy was found with serious stab wounds to his hand.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and yesterday (Wednesday), two teenage boys, both aged 15, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

They both remain in custody for questioning by detectives.
