Thomas Campbell murder probe - John Belfield is charged

A man has been charged with the murder of Thomas Campbell, whose body was found by a neighbour at his home on Riverside in Mossley in July, 2022.

Fugitive John Belfield (aged 29), of no fixed abode, has been charged with murder, conspiracy to murder, manslaughter, conspiracy to rob and conspiracy to supply class A drugs.

He was reportedly arrested yesterday at Manchester Airport when he arrived on a flight from South America. 

He has been remanded into custody and will appear before a Magistrate at a later date.

Belfield was circulated as wanted by GMP following an investigation into the death of Campbell, 38.

He was found dead at his home address on Riverside in Mossley at around 10.30am on Sunday, July 3, 2022.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene and a murder investigation was quickly launched.

Three individuals have already been sentenced for their role in Campbell’s death.

Reece Steven (29), of Poplar Street in Middleton, was found guilty of murder with conspiracy to rob.

He was sentenced to life in prison and must serve a minimum of 37 years.

Steven Cleworth (38), of Charles Street in Heywood, was found guilty of manslaughter with conspiracy to rob.

He was been sentenced life and must serve a minimum of 12 years. 

Coleen Campbell (38), of Bamford Street in Manchester, was found guilty of manslaughter with conspiracy to rob.

She was sentenced to 13 years and must serve a minimum of two thirds in prison.

“A team of detectives continue to work hard on this case to ensure Thomas’ family get the justice they deserve and we urge anyone who is still out there who has any information to speak to us and do the right thing.”
