The new flag flies atop St Chad's Church
A brand new St George’s Day flag flies proudly over a community’s parish church … thanks to the kindness of unsung locals.
In recent years Dorene Allport, a member of the St Chad's Church floral team, bought a flag to replace the weather hammered emblem in Uppermill.
And Mrs Allport’s husband David and his friend and colleague Doctor Andrew Taylor used their expert skills to ensure the flag takes pride of place on the church tower.
The self-effacing duo carried a complete refit of the flag pole after it was wrecked in 2019 by Storm Arwen.
Now they have just removed the battered flag and replaced it with a new one.
Their route took them up the spiral two-storey stone staircase church tower, through the bell chamber and to the roof by two more storeys of vertical ladders.
Mr Allport and Doctor Taylor are both members of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, with 102 distinguished years service between them.
