A group of Year 11 students from E-ACT The Oldham Academy North (TOAN) had an unforgettable experience when they visited Oxford University recently, gaining first-hand insight into life at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions.
The 23 pupils explored two of Oxford’s historic colleges, Corpus Christi and Brasenose, where they toured lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and student spaces.
A standout moment was visiting the Bodleian Library - one of the oldest libraries in Europe, which holds a copy of every book ever published.
The visit wasn’t just about seeing the impressive surroundings.
Pupils took part in an academic taster session, led by current Oxford students, giving them a real sense of university-level learning.
In the afternoon, they toured student accommodation before an interactive Q&A session, where Oxford students answered their questions about university life, academic challenges, and the opportunities studying at Oxford can bring.
The trip is part of TOAN’s wider commitment to raising aspirations and opening doors to higher education.
Another visit is already planned for May, giving even more students the chance to experience Oxford first-hand.
Jessica Giraud, Headteacher at E-ACT The Oldham Academy North, said: “We want every TOAN student to believe that top universities like Oxford are within their reach.
"Seeing them inspired by this visit, asking thoughtful questions, and picturing themselves at a world-class institution is exactly why we organise trips like this.
"We can’t wait to take more students later this year.”
With their sights set high, TOAN students are encouraged to think big and explore all the opportunities available to them for their future education and careers.
