Broadfield Primary School's Eco Council had the honour of visiting Oldham’s newly-appointed Mayor, Councillor Eddie Moores, and Mayoress Kathleen Moores.
The children arrived well-prepared, eager to ask questions and learn more about the Mayor’s role and his plans for the future of Oldham.
Councillor Moores spoke about the many exciting developments taking place in the town over the coming year and explained the responsibilities of his position.
Some pupils shared their own aspirations of becoming mayors one day, prompting an engaging discussion about local leadership and the role of the Youth Mayor.
When it became clear how passionate the children were about environmental issues, Mayor Moores invited his colleague, Councillor Abdul Jabbar MBE, to join the conversation.
A strong advocate for sustainability, Councillor Jabbar shared his inspiring personal story.
He spoke about growing up in Bangladesh, where he witnessed the devastating effects of flooding, and how those experiences sparked his lifelong commitment to protecting the environment.
He encouraged the children to take action, reminding them that they are the generation who can shape a better future for the planet.
The Broadfield pupils also spoke proudly about their own environmental achievements.
They shared the success of their “Cut Your Carbon” campaign, which received over 200 pledges from the school community - each committing to one of six actions to reduce carbon emissions.
They also highlighted their whole-school litter-picking initiative and gave special mention to School Council Chairman Abdul Muiz who, along with three friends, carries out daily litter picks on the school grounds.
To end the visit on a celebratory note, the Mayor and Mayoress told the children about their recent trip to Wembley Stadium, where they watched Latics win promotion back to the English Football League.
Balloons from the celebration still decorated the Mayor’s office, and in a kind gesture, the Mayor handed one to each of the children - much to their delight.
