‘Overlooked’ Shaw will have its say on major development

Shaw residents are being invited to have their say on a huge development plan that could transform their neighbourhood.

The area was initially ‘overlooked’ by developers looking to build 1,500 new homes at Beal Valley and Broadbent Moss, according to a councillor.

The group of developers – Casey, Grasscroft Property, Barratt Redrow, Kellen Homes, and Wain Homes – planned two in-person events as part of their public consultation – one in Higginshaw and another in Moorside.

But the huge development, which includes creating a new town centre and three football pitches worth of industrial space, stretches all the way from Derker to Shaw on former greenbelt land.

Councillor Howard Sykes said: “The original consultation was set to miss Shaw and Crompton and the Town Council out altogether, something which was not popular with local residents who want a chance to have their say.

“I want to thank Cavandish for their prompt and positive response and our local Town Council staff for responding to my request and scheduling an event that will be more accessible for people in Shaw and Crompton.”

The new event will be held at Shaw and Crompton Town Council on Kershaw Street on Wednesday, July 23 from 3-8pm.

A spokesperson said: “We are pleased to host an additional public event in Shaw to make it easier for local residents to attend, ask questions, and share their views on the proposed masterplan for Beal Valley and Broadbent Moss.”

The verdict on the plans, which would be carried over the course of 15 years, has been mixed so far.

Shaw residents have heavily criticised the loss of green space.

The area was de-designated green belt land through the controversial ‘Places for Everyone’ policy, a Greater Manchester-wide scheme that aims to bring 11,500 new homes to the borough.

But families in Royton and Heyside recognised the desperate need for new homes in the neighbourhood and welcomed the new tram stop due to be built near Cop Road as part of the plans.

Residents can also share their thoughts on the plans online.
