A group of friends from Royton have completed an emotional 90-mile walk in memory of local dad David Brearley, raising an incredible £8,000 so far for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.
The three-day challenge began at David’s beloved caravan in Grange-over-Sands and finished at Dr Kershaw’s in Royton, where he sadly passed away earlier this year.
Battling through rain, thunderstorms, lightning and even hailstones, the team showed true grit and determination to reach the finish line.
The walk was not only a tribute to David’s life but also a way of giving back to the hospice that cared for him and so many other local families.
A welcome-home party at The Trapdoor, Royton, raised a further £730 on the night, as family, friends and supporters came together with music, raffles and celebration to toast the walkers’ achievement.
Speaking after the walk, organiser Dave Brearley said: “I just wanted to thank everyone involved in helping me with this walk and thank you to all the amazing staff at Dr Kershaw’s.
"I promised the staff I would try to give something back, and the amount raised so far will go a long way to helping patients and families.
"This wasn’t just about my dad, it was for everyone connected to Kershaw’s.”
Dave has already set his sights on a new challenge, with the aim of raising enough money to buy the hospice a new specialist bed - costing around £14,000.
“Thank you to my family, friends and everyone who supported or donated - you’ve all made a huge difference,” he added.
