Vistry Group, the UK’s leading provider of mixed-tenure homes, has partnered with housing association, First Choice Homes Oldham, to deliver 147 affordable and energy efficient homes on the site of the former Oldham Mumps railway station, subject to planning permission.
The land, jointly owned by Oldham Borough Council and Transport for Greater Manchester, will be redeveloped by Vistry.
Upon completion, First Choice Homes Oldham will make 98 of the homes available for social rent, 40 for shared ownership and 9 for rent-to-buy.
The homes will be built to the Government’s Future Homes Standard, which will ensure carbon emissions are reduced by 75-80% compared to current standards.
This will be achieved through low-carbon heating systems and improving insulation.
Additionally, the site has excellent transport links into Manchester, with the Mumps Metrolink station nearby.
The brownfield site, known as Southlink, is situated in Oldham town centre and has been vacant since the railway shut in 2009.
It has long been earmarked for development and will be supported by grant from both Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Homes England.
Matthew Parkes, Managing Director, Vistry Manchester and Cheshire East, said: “We’re thrilled to have been selected for this important project, which aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver high-quality, affordable homes that meet the needs of local communities.
"This development not only revitalises a long-vacant brownfield site but also provides sustainable, energy-efficient homes in the heart of Oldham.”
Mark Gifford OBE, chief executive of First Choice Homes Oldham, said: “FCHO is delighted to be partnering with Vistry Group to deliver Oldham’s next flagship housing scheme and our biggest ever development.
"Southlink is an exciting and financially strong project and, if granted planning permission, will create much-needed family homes people can afford to rent or buy and be proud of.
“Doing so will help meet Oldham’s housing priorities, especially in regards to social rents, and support community wellbeing, sustainability, and opportunity.
"Southlink also supports the Council’s ambitions for a fairer, greener, and more prosperous borough.”
The plans have now been submitted, with Oldham Council set to decide on the application.
