A 12-strong squad from Oldham Mountain Rescue Team were called out to assist a family of eight, consisting of adults and children, who had become stuck in Birchen Clough, close to Dovestones in Saddleworth.
The steep path down had become unstable, making it unsafe for the family to continue.
Police officers from Greater Manchester Police reached the family first but were unable to bring them safely down, so the team made their way to the location.
The family was well prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear, but after waiting for help were cold.
The team provided extra warm layers before beginning the descent, supporting the group by having one team member with each individual family member.
The team then helped with safe crossing of the river by forming a human chain and putting in a safety line across the water.
Once the team's 4x4 vehicle was in place, everyone was warmed up and then transported back to their car in the nearby car park.
Said an OMRT spokesperson: "A huge thank-you to our volunteer team members and to the police for their assistance.
"The family did the right thing in calling for help and we're glad everyone made it down safely.”
The team were involved for two-and-a-half hours.
