Fiona Goddard leads Chadderton event as survivors share experiences of child sexual exploitation
Survivors of child sexual exploitation gathered at a parish church hall in Chadderton last night for an event focused on raising awareness and providing a space for lived experience to be shared.
The event brought together survivors, campaigners and members of the local community to discuss the ongoing impact of abuse, both historically and, as was suggested during the event, potentially still affecting communities today.
Fiona Goddard, known for her media work and involvement in national discussions on grooming and exploitation, spoke about the importance of shared experience. She told the audience that open conversation can help both survivors and the wider community better understand the impact of abuse.
She also spoke about her involvement in the national inquiry process, stating that she had concerns about how her contributions were handled. She said this led her to step back from formal engagement and instead focus on local forums where survivors can speak openly.
The evening included personal testimonies from survivors. Jamieleigh Jones shared her experience publicly, alongside Nadheem, who described being taken abroad as a child and subjected to abuse. His account was met with a strong emotional response from those in attendance, including a standing ovation.
During the event, Fiona Goddard also referred to ongoing campaigning work alongside Raja Miah, and spoke about the importance of accountability where evidence supports it.
The event also heard from Brian Hobin, whose views were met with resistance from some in attendance.
The event highlighted the strength of feeling surrounding the issue, as well as the importance many place on continuing to provide spaces for survivors to share their experiences.
Attendees described the evening as emotional and impactful, highlighting the importance of safe spaces for survivors to speak openly. Fiona Goddard said she believes events like this form part of the healing process for survivors and the wider community.
