Oldham man who drove the wrong way down M60 is jailed

A man who drove down the wrong way of the M60 has been jailed for 38 weeks and has been disqualified from driving for two years.

Amaar Abid (18/07/1997) Copster Hill Road, Oldham, was handed sentenced at Manchester Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday 17 June 2026) for dangerous driving. He was also given extended driving test and a £154 fine.

The court heard how on Tuesday 10 June 2025 at around 1.20am, officers observed a Volkswagen Golf that drove through a red light on Alan Turning Way and was requested to stop.

However, Abid refused to do so and was pursued by officers onto Hyde Road and then onto the M60 towards Oldham. 

Throughout the pursuit the Golf slowed down to crawling pace on the motorway and continued to drive erratically. Officers took decisive action to mitigate the risk to the public by commencing a rolling road block on one of Manchester’s busiest motorways in the middle of the night.

As the pursuit came to a conclusion, in a last desperate attempt to evade arrest, Abid decided to turn and drive the wrong way of the M60 before officers made tactical contact with the Golf to bring the vehicle to a stop.

PC Oliver Garner from our Roads Policing Unit said: "Amaar Abid's actions that night showed a complete disregard for the safety of everyone else on the road. Not only did he fail to stop for officers, but he drove erratically on the motorway and ultimately made the reckless decision to drive the wrong way on the M60 in a desperate attempt to avoid arrest.

"Driving towards oncoming traffic on one of the region's busiest motorways could very easily have resulted in life-changing consequences, causing serious injury or even loss of life”

"Thanks to the professionalism and quick decision-making of our officers, the pursuit was brought to a safe conclusion and Abid was taken into custody before anyone was harmed”

"We will continue to take robust action against those who choose to put the public at risk through dangerous driving. Our roads must be safe for everyone, and offenders who endanger lives can expect to face the full consequences of their actions."
