SPARK Oldham CIC is celebrating the ongoing contribution of students and staff from Oldham College, who have been volunteering their time on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon during June to support a wide range of improvement projects inside and outside their community space on Fitton Hill

Over recent weeks, students have worked alongside the Spark team to enhance community spaces and develop their practical skills through a variety of activities. Their efforts have included litter picking, general maintenance work, making benches, donating a mud kitchen for families and children and transforming areas through creative artwork displayed on external walls.

Students studying barbering, hairdressing and beauty therapies have also been providing barbering services, nail treatments and hairdressing experiences, helping to build confidence and develop workplace skills.

The partnership has provided valuable experience for students whilst making a visible difference to the environment and facilities available to local people.

“We are incredibly grateful to the students and staff from Oldham College for their commitment,” said Kim Rogers, Founder of Spark Oldham CIC. “They have contributed so much through their hard work and willingness to get involved. The students have helped make our community spaces more welcoming for everyone who uses them."

Spark Oldham CIC would also like to extend a special thank you to B&Q Oldham (Westwood) for their generous donation of plants and soil which has helped enhance outdoor spaces and supported the development of community projects. Their support has played an important role in helping create welcoming environments for local people to enjoy.

One student involved in the project commented: “It's been great to get involved in different activities and use the skills we've been learning in a real community setting. We've enjoyed working with the Spark team and seeing the improvements we've been able to make together.”

The partnership has provided valuable opportunities for students to gain practical experience while supporting a range of projects within the community. From environmental improvements and maintenance work to creative projects and wellbeing services, the collaboration has helped enhance community spaces and demonstrates the positive impact that can be achieved.
