Whether it's navigating an unfamiliar route, dealing with busy roads or encountering impatient motorists, driving doesn't always go to plan. New research has now placed Oldham among the UK's most challenging locations for drivers.
MoneySuperMarket’s UK Driveability Report ranks Oldham tenth out of 58 UK cities, boroughs and local authorities, with an overall driveability score of 32 out of 100. A lower score indicates a more challenging driving environment.
The research forms part of a wider study into the factors that influence driving conditions, including road infrastructure, traffic volumes, road safety, road conditions and vehicle crime concerns.
Alongside the location rankings, MoneySuperMarket surveyed 2,002 UK drivers to understand what they find most stressful behind the wheel.
The results suggest that driving stress is a common experience, with 81% of respondents saying they had avoided driving somewhere because they expected the journey to be too stressful or difficult.
Dealing with impatient or aggressive drivers was the most commonly cited concern, with 64.9% of motorists saying situations such as tailgating and beeping made them feel stressed. Bad weather followed closely, cited by 64.8%.
For many, unfamiliar surroundings can also make a journey more difficult. Almost 60% of drivers (59.6%) said they found driving in an unfamiliar town, city or area stressful, while 59.1% identified heavy traffic or congestion as a source of stress.
Checking directions before setting off, allowing extra time for delays and paying attention to road signs can help drivers feel more prepared. Keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and resisting pressure from impatient road users can also help motorists concentrate on driving safely.
With dealerships serving drivers in the Oldham area, family owned Swansway Motor Group has a local connection to the communities featured in the research.
With more than 8 in 10 drivers surveyed admitting to avoiding a journey because of anticipated stress, the findings highlight how preparation and confidence can play a part in making every day driving feel more manageable.
