First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) will plant nearly 80 trees across Derker and Littlemoor this winter after receiving £43,000 from a Greater Manchester green initiative.

This is the 5th year running the housing association has received funding from the City of Trees project and 78 will be planted over the coming months.

The work is helping with climate change, biodiversity and improving communities across Oldham.

FCHO is also asking for local residents to come forward and become Tree Guardians to look after the new saplings.

“Trees make a huge difference to our customers’ quality of life, they help attract and home wildlife and they make our community spaces inviting, so we’re delighted to secure this funding,” said FCHO's arboriculture officer Tim Simpson.

“It is also one of a range of projects we have to improve the environment for our customers and for wildlife. Over the coming months we will continue our bulb planting and wildflower turf installation in our communities.”

Mr Simpson also called on local residents to get involved by becoming a Tree Guardian.

“Since 2022, we have planted 314 trees and we know that in their early years, they can be vulnerable. We would like to recruit more Tree Guardians to help keep an eye on them so they get the best start in life. It is a vital role and will do much to help local communities and wildlife,” he explained.

Trees to be planted in the two districts include European beech, hornbeam, golden alder, maple, red-leaved sycamore and whitebeam.

FCHO is also contributing an additional £7,000 towards planting costs with the work carried out by Limb2Limb Tree Services.
