Grand National Day brought some very welcome fine and warmer weather after a depressing week that affected the midweek programme in the Lancashire and Cheshire amateur Football League.

Teams in action on Saturday are now galloping towards a frantic finale to the season.

The cancellation of several midweek games brought the furrows back to fixture secretary Malc Kershaw’s brow with a just a handful of vital games able to beat the weather.

In Division Two the only game played saw second-placed Trafford United close the gap on runaway leaders Moston Brook reserves as they scored the only goal of their game with Salford Vics reserves.

Division Three action had Heaton Mersey on fire in a 6-2 win over AFC Oldham reserves.

There was more action and plenty of goals in Division A, led by Flixton JFC, 8-1 winners at Oldham Saints, and Manchester Rovers, by 5-3 over Altrincham Hale.

Chadderton Park remain Division One title favourites, with games in hand on Sale, as they had to work hard for a 3-2 win at Elton Lib Hargreaves on Saturday.

In Division Two, Trafford United’s hopes of catching Moston Brook reserves were dealt a blow as they went down 3-2 at lowly South Manchester.

Moston Brook extended their lead at the top to six points with a gritty 3-2 win at Kartel Sports.

AFC Oldham enjoyed a 6-0 win at Abacus Media reserves and also on the winning trail were Poynton JFC, by 2-1 at Didsbury and R-Kix FC by 3-1 at Aldermere.

Division Three leaders Dukinfield Athletic look unstoppable as they maintained their 13-point lead at the top with a clinical 4-0 win at Badger Casuals.

Second-placed Spurley Hey were also in good form with a 5-2 win at Moston Brook thirds.

Staly Lions stay level on points with Hey after a close 2-1 win at Milton reserves and Saddleworth 3D were delighted with a 3-2 win at Bury Ams reserves.

The other game in the division had AFC Oldham reserves beating Old Strets reserves 3-1.

Division A leaders Milltown extended their lead at the top to four points over non-playing Hillgate with a big 8-3 derby win over Milnrow Firgrovia.

Village Manchester reserves were also in good form with a 6-2 win over Oldham Saints, who recovered well from a 5-1 interval deficit.

In Division B, four goals were the order of the day for AFC Oldham thirds in their local derby with Saddleworth 3D reserves, Barrhill Lads 4-2 against Village Manchester thirds and Timperley Villa 4-2 at Didsbury reserves.
