Dojo delight for Chadderton karate hopefuls

Date published: 29 February 2024

The Radclyffe School-based Dojo Karate Centre in Chadderton sent its squad down to the Team GB selections in Norwich - and 48 members got selected to represent their country at the European Championships in August in High Wycombe.

To be invited to the selections, members had to win a medal at the qualifying competitions around the country in the last 12 months.

Coach Irfan Ansari said: "This is amazing news for Oldham and Rochdale.

"This is the most we have ever got selected for an international competition.

"It just goes to show that our coaching works and our members are ever achieving new levels and breaking records.

"We have had amazing success at world level since 2008 and this year will be even better.

"Selected members have now got five months of hard and dedicated training to be in medal winning positions at the Championships."

Irfan continued: "Funding is always an issue as all entries are self-funded.

"So members will be asking their relatives and businesses to sponsor them.

"So if there is anyone out there who would like to fund our team, then please get in touch with us.

"We are also setting up a GoFundMe page to help pay for all our under 18-year-olds.

"We are asking all Oldham citizens to help our young team members achieve this amazing goal of representing Oldham and England at the Championships."
