Cheikh Thiam scores for Avro
A strong home performance saw Avro defeat a higher-ranked side 3-0 at home in a pre-season friendly fixture.
Avro defeated National League North side Curzon Ashton by three goals in a solid display.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a Liam Ellis strike that came off the back of a beautiful cross.
Both goal keepers made some good saves for their sides in the first-half with Avro’s Grant Shenton completing a great effort just minutes from half-time to keep the score at 1-0 at the break.
After both sides came back onto the pitch, Avro moved to put the game beyond doubt.
Cheikh Thiem scored from outside of the box in the 48th minute with a strong strike that beat the Curzon Ashton keeper.
Just four minutes later and Ellis doubled his total with another goal to achieve his brace as Avro went up to 3-0.
Throughout the second-half Avro continued to put pressure on Curzon Ashton who had plenty of possession, but were unable to capitalise on their opportunities.
In the dying stages of the game, a spectacular strike from Avro’s James Dwyer rattled the cross bar.
The game ended soon after with the hosts three goal victors.
“It was a great effort from the team against Curzon Ashton,” said a spokesman from Avro.
“The side played good attacking football which is something the team wants to do this coming season.
“The fans can expect more of the same throughout the 2024/2025 campaign.”
“The performance was disappointing as a group,” said Curzon Ashton’s manager Mark Bradshaw.
“We know we should be better than we were today.
“Every defeat is disappointing.
“Avro are a very good side, very experienced and a very aggressive side.”
Avro will now host Rochdale tomorrow (Tuesday) in their last pre-season match - kick-off 7.45pm.
Meanwhile, Avro have announced the signing of forward Mike Phenix.
The former Salford City man has been a proven goal-scorer during the RO’s pre-season and did enough to impress the new joint management team of Mike Norton and David Birch, who offered him a deal.
