'It's been an absolute privilege'

The Rev Michael Howarth, associate priest and former curate at St Andrew's, Dearnley, Littleborough, has retired after nearly six years as a member of the church's ministerial team.

"It's been an absolute privilege and a pleasure. You have taught me a lot," he told the congregation after conducting his last service.

Originally from Oldham, now living in Smithy Bridge, he was a former pupil of the long-gone Counthill Grammar School.

He conducted his last service solo because the vicar of St Andrew's, the Rev Rachel Battershell was at Manchester Cathedral for the ordination as deacon of the Rev Anne Gilbert, who will join the St Andrew's team in September as assistant curate.

Living in Shaw and currently a teacher at Hathershaw College, Oldham, Rev Anne will conduct her first service at St Andrew's on September 2.

She will work as assistant curate in the benefice of Dearnley, Smallbridge and Wardle.
