Hats off to Fullcircle - a girls' community project group that provides innovative services to a wide range of residents across the local community.

The group have now been awarded a grant from Action Oldham Fund to provide a learning experience for young girls in Oldham.

Girls face unprecedented levels of stress and pressure to do well at school, to look and behave a certain way, to measure up to expectations from friends, family, teachers and the media.

The combination of all these pressures can be unmanageable and is having damaging consequences for girl’s wellbeing.

The aim of the project is to ensure that young people have the tools to fulfil their potential, feel confident in themselves and succeed in their futures.

Funding from Action Oldham enabled the 20-week health and well-being project GIRLs, in which girls aged 10-15 years old build their resilience and develop skills for use in their future life.

By providing educational workshops and delivering dance and cooking classes in a social place, the group has become a safe space for young girls to explore themselves emotionally as well as the opportunity to learn about their society and other people’s lives and cultures.

The long-term outcome from the group is that the girls all round skills, such as social and emotional capabilities have been strengthened.

In turn, there has been an increase in their positive life outcomes, including educational attainment, health, future employment status, and behaviour.

Fullcircle director Dawn Fox said: “The grant we received from the Action Oldham Fund allowed us to deliver a 20-week girls only informal education project which engaged 15 girls aged between 10-13 years of age.

"The girls learned how to manage difficulties in their lives by applying positive coping strategies and resilience-building techniques which had a positive impact on their mental wellbeing.

"The project provided opportunities for personal and social development; the participants learned new skills and developed existing skills, furthermore, all the girls achieved several AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance) Awards and certificates.”
