Back alley regeneration is a big hit with residents

Date published: 10 December 2018

The regeneration of a back alley in Clarksfield Road has been completed – after residents were left annoyed by mud and water not draining properly.

There had also been complaints about the unkempt look.

Many of those living nearby said the general state of the alleyway was an eyesore – and they took it upon themselves to do something about it.

It was hoped that the regeneration would provide a safe and clean environment for residents to use.

They secured funding for clearing the alleyway and for it to be tarmacked.

The work was completed on Wednesday.

Wasim Iqbal, a local resident and member of the Clarksfield Community Group, says: “It’s taken a while and a lot of hard work and patience to get here.

“But the end result is well worth it.

“They alleyway is another step in regenerating our local alleyways so that our youngsters can use them again.

“Clarksfield Community Group has been working with local residents in other alleyways and will continue to support anyone who wants to work to look after their alleyways.”

Local resident Zubair Ashraf added: “This alleyway was an eyesore before, but now it looks a lot better.

“It is cleaner and safer and can actually be used by the residents.

“It’s a real asset now.”

Wasim Jawaid, another resident, said: “The great thing about this regeneration is that our children can now play in a safe and secure environment in the back alley rather than at the front.

“It was always a worry for parents because it’s a busy main road.”

Local residents worked together with Clarksfield Community Group and secured funding via partner organisations Oldham Big Local, Oldham Council, IF Oldham, Action Together and Groundworks.
