Candles of hope to provide comfort to community ahead of Christmas

Date published: 15 December 2023

A Failsworth church and charity will be opening its doors and giving the local community the chance to light a candle within its church hall, providing hope and comfort at Christmas, which for many can be a difficult time of the year.

The Salvation Army in Failsworth will hold its Christmas Candles of Hope event on Tuesday, December 19, from 11am – 1pm at its church and community centre on Oldham Road.

Candles will be provided for people to light in memory of a loved one, a symbol of hope for the future and as a way to come to terms with difficulties they might be facing this festive period.

Refreshments of hot and cold drinks and mince pies will be available.

Major Annette Allen, church leader of The Salvation Army in Failsworth, said: “Lighting a candle can symbolise a lot; the hope that can overcome the darkness, joy triumphing pain and bringing to the forefront of people’s minds the memory of someone special and the power of lighting a candle can also provide a level of comfort.

“For us, we’re keen to provide an outreach to many who might struggle at Christmas which is typically a time where families and loved ones come together but sadly for some this may not be possible.

"It can become lonely, remembering who is not around.

"We want to confront that pain with members of our community and see light, in what can often be a dark and challenging time.”

Failsworth Salvation Army will also hold a carol concert at the church and community centre on Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24.

Carols on the Green will start at 5pm for a 40 minute sing-a-long outside the front of the church followed by refreshments.
