Kate, 35, has spent more than five years helping to keep the park tidy throughout the year, often alongside her mum Pat. She was nominated by Amanda Cawdron, chair of the friends of the park. First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) has worked with the group for several years.
“For more than five years, Kate has dedicated her time to keep the area clean, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone who uses it,” Mrs Cawdron said.
“Through her consistent efforts, kindness and community spirit, she makes Royton a better place for others every single week.”
Kate, who lives with Down syndrome, also makes small keepsakes and leaves them in trees and bushes for people to find and take home.
“She is an inspiration to those around her and a wonderful example of how one person’s actions can have a positive impact on an entire community,” Mrs Cawdron said.
Nazia Ahmed, FCHO’s neighbourhood co-ordinator for Royton South, presented Kate with a certificate and a £50 shopping voucher. Kate said she was happy and proud to receive the award.
Pat said: “I am so proud of Kate for her efforts. Kate doesn’t get a lot of recognition, so it was such a lovely surprise for her to receive her nomination.
“Kate gets so much from volunteering with the group – we both do – and she loves giving back to her local community, so it feels really special.”
