EVERY vote can make a difference
Date published: 06 December 2019
Editor,
As people seeking asylum and refugees, we are not allowed to vote.
Despite this, what a new Government does can have a big impact on our lives and our ability to contribute to this community and country.
We would like to ask the candidates running in this election: if you get the opportunity to get into office, please look into issues that affect refugees and asylum seekers.
The asylum process is so difficult and painful.
We face problems that not many people know about.
We want to be able to able to reach safety so we can live our lives in peace, but we have to risk our lives to get here; we want to learn English to help us integrate, but we cannot study; we want to earn money to be able to feed and clothe our families, but we cannot work.
It would be better if the new Government allowed us to improve our lives so we can give back to the country and our communities that have welcomed us.
We see this election as a celebration of the power to choose. We encourage everyone to vote. This is the time. Every person can make a difference.
