Michael doggedly devoted to pets in need

Dedication to helping large numbers of unwanted and neglected animals has earned Michael Waugh and his team a Pride in Oldham award nomination.
The Pennine Pen Animal Rescue Centre was started in October 2001 by Mr Waugh and friends, who wanted to help needy animals in the area. The team works tirelessly to provide a sanctuary for cats, dogs and small animals that are in dire need of help.
Philip Butterworth, a volunteer from Chadderton, nominated Mr Waugh, citing the sheer amount of time and effort that he has devoted.
He said: “He’s an unsung hero, who runs around helping and does so much for local people. He’s devoted his life to it. Officially he gets two days off, but in reality he’s working all the time.”
Mr Waugh said: “I’m really surprised, to be honest — it’s really unexpected. I’ve worked with animals from the age of 16 and at 17 decided to set up the centre. I’ve always wanted to help animals and every year there are more and more that need it. We try to provide services to those in need.”
