Lifelong learners are top of the class!

Date published: 04 September 2018

It’s never too late to return to learning.

That was the message when the latest batch of adult learners from Oldham Council’s Lifelong Service picked up their English and maths GCSE results.

In total 30 learners took the maths exam and all of them passed.

Another 100-per-cent pass rate was achieved by the 15 learners who took the English examination.

Councillor Shaid Mushtaq, Cabinet member for Employment and Skills, said: “I’d like to congratulate every learner on passing their GCSE English and Maths exam and also extend that to the Lifelong Learning team and tutors for all their hard work.

"I’m sure the results will lead on to more positive outcomes in the learners’ lives and I’d encourage the adult population to follow suit given the importance of these subjects to employers."

Both the English and maths courses are free and learners have skills checks to determine their current level and ensure they access the course that best suits their needs.

Oldham Lifelong Learning Service was graded as Outstanding by Ofsted in its last inspection.

The service runs a wide range of subjects, programmes and short courses that are available for residents aged 19 and above.

Melissa McDermott, a Lifelong Learning Centre user, said: “I wanted to return to learning to improve my grades that I got from school.

"I really felt that I could achieve higher grades and this is something that has always bothered me.”

“With the help of Oldham Lifelong Learning I was able to finally try again and I am so happy with my results now.”

Subjects are open to the unemployed, those who are returning to further education through to people who are looking for personal or professional development or simply just a sense of achievement.
