Selim Benachour will be hoping his side can build upon the momentum created by beating Sunderland in last week’s Papa John’s Trophy upset.

Benachour, who is still vying for the managerial role at Oldham on a permanent basis, was buoyant after the full time whistle on Wednesday.

He said: “I think we delivered a top performance and this will help us for the future, in the league.

“We see that we have some quality. When we want to play we have some quality and we need to keep going and I'm sure we will turn it around.”

Tuesday’s Tranmere fixture will be a chance for Latics to lift themselves back out of the relegation zone, after Carlilse’s late winner in the most recent round of League Two fixtures saw them fall back in.

Tranmere sit respectably in 10th, but have struggled for goals of late, hitting only six in six matches.

Latics’ following game is against league leaders Forest Green, so points on the board now are vital as they seek to navigate the busy Christmas period unshackled from their poor form so far this campaign.

And rising star Harry Vaughan, whose composed finish settled the Sunderland fixture, will be hoping for a first league start under his new boss.

The 17 year old was an unused sub in Benachour’s managerial debut defeat to Salford City, but the Tunisian was full of praise for Vaughan on Wednesday.

He said: “I'm so happy for Harry because he's come a long way, he works hard and he deserves his goal.

“He was very good in training which is why I gave him a start and he gave me a good response so I'm really happy about his performance.”
