Gravel bikes are a half way between mountain bikes and road bikes
From time-to-time cycling goes through little revolution. Years ago, there was one kind of cycle and that being for the road. Then came mountain bikes, for serious off-road riding, then came BMX for trick riding and now it is gravel bikes.
Gravel bikes are a half way between mountain bikes and road bikes and great fun. With wider tyres and more grip these are the bikes for going down the gravel roads and bye-ways. I have mentioned in this column previously the Monsal trail in Derbyshire which is ideal, but we have many miles of tracks local to Oldham.
A great place I came across a few weeks ago was Hicks Lodge near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, 01530 274533 owned by Forestry England, lots of trails for different abilities, it is free to use although there are car park charges.
If you want something more adventurous head to Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire, again there are car park charges but the trails and tracks will keep the fittest of cyclists busy for a day.
Being off-road you are free from cars but care is always needed when off-road as crashes to occur.
There is an aspect of cycling that is suitable for everyone. Next month I hope to tell you more of a trip I am planning to cycle in Holland.
Safe riding to all and give fellow cyclists a wave.
