IT was ready, steady, go for Year 7 students at Hathershaw College who launched their own Daily Mile challenge.
The national initiative encourages school children to be more active and boost their fitness levels by running or walking a mile, around 15 minutes, every day.
The Daily Mile is based on proven research that links physical ability to raised attainment rates and greater levels of concentration.
Hathershaw students raced to the challenge and followed a route around their school during their PE lesson.
Once established, it will be their responsibility to keep up the daily activity before or after school, or during their lunch break.
Focus
Lorna Phillips, assistant principal, said: "This year we are having a big focus on student health.
"We've set up quite a few things already, including a pedometer challenge and the FRESH club, for students to maintain their own health and fitness.
"One of our school pledges is for students to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing."
