Witnesses said the smoke billowed out of the camper before oil burst from the engine and spread across the road near to the Tesco's superstore.
Fire crews were called and attended the scene yesterday morning by which point the smoke had cleared but the engine, was still smouldering.
The driver, while visibly upset, was unharmed and the fire crew ensured the area was safe.
