THIS student from Derker is swapping the Pennines for the spectacular scenery of Iceland for a charity trek.

Beth Sharp (20), a history and politics student at the University of Sheffield, will be doing a 250-mile trek in the mountains of the north east coast of Iceland to raise money for Francis House Children's Hospice.

The challenge involves five days of hiking through the tremendous Icelandic landscape, a unique experience which will test Beth physically, mentally and emotionally.

She is setting off on September 3 with 24 other fundraisers and her uncle Rev David Ireland, who is chief executive of the hospice.

Beth, a former pupil of Oldham Hulme Grammar School, said: "My uncle David was the one who got me involved. I haven't done a trek before.

"I completed the Duke of Edinburgh award, but I've not done anything since then. It has been a bit of a shock, starting training again.

"I did the Yorkshire Three Peaks over three weekends and some local walks in Saddleworth and across the Pennines.

"The Yorkshire Three Peaks was quite hard. It seemed to go on forever. It has been difficult but it's for a good cause and you have got to keep going."
