A SCHEME which helps people who cannot afford a deposit to secure a private rented house or flat is celebrating its 150th bond.
Oldham Council and First Choice Homes launched the scheme in 2006 by offering a guarantee to private landlords.
It is open to those aged 18 or over and supports single people, couples and families who are either in receipt of benefits or on a low income.
Money bonds are usually needed by private landlords to cover any damage or repairs after the tenancy finishes.
But the council says only a very small number of paper bonds have been redeemed by landlords, and the vast majority of tenancies have been maintained successfully.
The cabinet member for community services and housing, Councillor John McCann, said: “This scheme has been especially valuable in areas where social rented stock, such as council properties, is very limited.
“The Oldham Bond Scheme has been a fantastic success largely thanks to the landlords who have taken part.
“It has allowed us to support people who may not have otherwise been able to access private rented accommodation.
“While we have a substantial number of landlords involved in the scheme, we are always keen to attract more.
“We especially need accommodation for single people and larger families.”
All properties are inspected before a bond is issued. Landlords are provided with advice and may be able to get support if they need to bring their properties up to the standard required.
