CHARITY challenge . . . Nitin Solanki
ONE amazing feat isn’t enough for a charity champion from Oldham. He is taking on a mammoth six challenges to raise cash.
Sports-mad Nitin Solanki took part in the Shine night marathon in Manchester on Sunday to kick-start his epic summer fundraising mission.
Walking until 2am, he completed the course in just under seven hours.
He said: “I’ve got a few blisters now but it was great. I’m doing the next challenge in under a fortnight so I’m trying to walk through the aches and pains.”
A sports development officer for Oldham Council, 26-year-old Nitin will also be tackling 10k runs in Manchester and Leeds and hurling himself out of a plane for a Help For Heroes skydive.
He said: “I’ve always been into sport from being young.
“Doing this with my friends has given me a reason to keep fit and do something great. It won’t be easy but I’ll keep going.”
Nitin, of Chapel Road, Hollinwood, has been out training with friends around Saddleworth to ensure he is in peak condition to take on the tasks.
Money raised for the runs will go to Cancer Research, and he’s hoping to raise thousands of pounds.
He said: “Friends and family have been affected by cancer and it’s a charity that touches people’s hearts.
“The challenges are something to look forward to, they get your adrenaline going and make you push yourself and get to the finish line.
“Hopefully as a sports officer I will be able to set an example of how enjoyable fitness can be and spur more people to get involved with missions like this.”
The Great North Run in September is also on the list, while a bumper entertainment event at the White Hart in Lydgate will raise cash for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.
Taking place on Saturday June 4, the event includes a Elton John tribute act, raffle, auction and five-course meal.
Tickets for the event can be bought by calling 07776-238-297.
