Abseilers raise thousands for rescue team’s 50th

Dozens of people have abseiled down Oldham Civic Centre to raise money and mark the 50th anniverary of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.
Almost 40 supporters, from first-timers to experienced climbers, signed up for the 180ft descent which so far has raised over £8,000.
Organiser Matt Torr said: “It’s a great challenge and it looks like an awfully long way down from the top but it gives them an experience they will remember for a long time.”
We’ve had a really good turnout and people have worked really hard to raise the money. We’re really grateful for that as we can’t operate without it.”
Among those taking part were members of the Saddleworth Ladies Fundraising Committee (SLFC).
Julie Southern (45), from the SLFC, did the abseil for the first time and has raised £520 so far.
She said: “It was brilliant. Nerve-wracking, but a fantastic experience.”
Stephanie Pelmore, from Greenfield, wife of OMRT fundraising co-ordinator Barry Pelmore, raised most, an impressive £1,605.
She said: “It was brilliant. The team is fantastic.”
The event raised around £8,000 so far, with more funds yet to come in.
