Vandals have destroyed flowers in a wrecking spree at Failsworth’s historic Pole landmark and nearby gardens.
Police were called to the Pole following a report that a group of 20-30 youths had vandalised the site and threatened a passer-by who tried to stop them.
Police are investigating the incident, which happened at 7pm on Monday, and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Inspector Jim Troisi of Oldham police said: “This is a mindless act of vandalism which has caused upset in the community.
“This is a place of history and remembrance, peace and respect. To desecrate the memorial in such a way is atrocious.
“We are aware of concerns in the local community about anti-social behaviour in the area and I want to remind people that they can speak to us in confidence if they have any worries.
“I’d encourage parents to speak to their children and be aware who they are out with and what they are doing.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555 111.
