Sea of red tribute a lasting memory

SIX North Chadderton School pupils honoured the fallen on a trip to the spectacular “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red” poppy display at the Tower of London.

The pupils - Hasna Begum, Mujahid Miah, John White, Amelia Grattidge, Max Stockton and Tara Ellaby - were chosen as a reward for their academic achievements and behaviour.

Accompanied by head teacher Joy Clark and history teacher David Thompson, the seven were deeply impressed by the 888,000 ceramic poppies, created by artist Paul Cummins, which fill the moat around the Tower of London, each one representing a life lost during World War One.

The school has bought one of the poppies, which will arrive at the school later in the year.

Miss Clark said: “It was a day that we will never forget. It was a special day for the school to pay their respects.”

The pupils also visited the historic Royal Hospital at Chelsea, home to 300 Chelsea pensioners.
