TWO proud Oldhamers have been appointed Deputy Lieutenants of Greater Manchester.
Former Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati and Darren Clark, who has had a lifetime involvement with St John Ambulance, were chosen by Lord Lieutenant Warren Smith to help enhance the image of Greater Manchester.
The Lieutenant is the Queen’s representative in Greater Manchester and is assisted by 70 Deputy Lieutenants.
Shobna, a former Hulme Grammar School pupil, is most famous for her role as Sunita Alahan in Coronation Street. She has a degree in Arabic and Middle Eastern politics and is Chancellor of Oldham Children’s University.
Mr Clark, who runs three Oldham funeral director offices, has served as county president for St John Ambulance and received the Brother of the Order of St John from the Queen in 1999. A volunteer since he was eight, he was nominated for a Pride in Oldham Award in 2004.
