HGVs go off-Broadway
Date published: 26 March 2015
IMPROVED signs will hopefully help reduce the impact of lorries on the busy Chadderton Broadway route between Manchester Road and the motorway junction.
The council and Highways Agency have installed new signs on the northbound carriageway of the M60 to deter HGVs from using Broadway as a shortcut. The sign tells drivers to use the M62 when travelling to Middleton’s Stakehill Industrial Estate.
A survey from the Highways Agency found that around a quarter of all vehicles use the A663 as a cut-through between the M60 and the M62.
Councillor Dave Hibbert, cabinet member housing, planning and transport, said: “This has been an issue for local people for a number of years. The A663 is a busy route between Rochdale and Oldham and something needed to be drastically done to alleviate some traffic. I’m delighted to say our requests to improve the signage on the M60 have been heard and action has been taken.”
