Old boy Neil was proud of his roots

A FORMER Hulme Grammar School pupil and educationalist who was proud of his Oldham roots has died.
Neil Fitton CBE died peacefully aged 78 at the Countess of Chester Hospital on January 18 after a long illness.
Mr Fitton was born in Eldon Street, Oldham. and wrote about the local mills in a collection of poems, “Bricks and Straw”. He received a scholarship to Hulme Grammar School and went on to study at Bristol University before qualifying as a teacher. He later became director of education for Cheshire and was awarded the CBE when he retired in 1991.
He leaves two children, two stepchildren and seven grandchildren.
Mr Fitton’s funeral takes place on Thursday at Chester Crematorium from 1.20pm. Information: Co-operative Funeralcare on 01244 323970.
