New warning issued following more 'disgraceful' fly-tipping

Oldham Council has issued a fresh tough warning after reports of widespread illegal fly-tipping across Saddleworth.

Frustrated locals have highlighted problems in several villages, including at Harrop Edge Lane, off Huddersfield Road in Delph, with suspected drug paraphernalia and bags of rubbish dumped.

One local, commenting on that scene, said: ”It's disgraceful and seems to be happening in quite a few places.

"If you can drive it to secluded spots, you can drive it to a tip.

"Dissappointingly, it looks that there's more."

Nasir Dad, Oldham Council’s Director of Environment, said: “Unfortunately fly-tipping and the illegal dumping of waste affects communities across the country, not just in Oldham.

"The people carrying it out are criminals.

“Our officers have already visited this site and it will be cleared,” he promised.

“We’ll continue to investigate all incidents reported to us and if we find any evidence linking the waste to an individual or a business, we will take action, as we have done on many occasions in the past and will continue to do so.”

And he warned: “Over the last few years, the number of people advertising on social media that they will collect and dispose of household waste has increased.

“Unfortunately, many of these do not have valid waste carrier licences and are operating illegally.

“In many cases, they pick up the waste, keep hold of anything that is valuable and dump the rest.

“Your waste is your responsibility, and if that happens, you could be the one facing a fine or a day in court.

“Make sure you check anyone you pay to take your waste has a valid licence - it takes a couple of minutes.

“And if you do spot fly-tipping, please report it to us.”
