Athletic heroes chasing Masters crown

ANDY RITCHIE, David Eyres and a host of other golden oldies will be back playing for Athletic tomorrow when the club has its first venture into The Screwfix Masters Cup.

Athletic are taking part in the North-West Masters, covered by Sky Sports, at the Manchester Arena where they will take on Manchester United, Manchester City, Bolton, Blackburn and Leeds.

Ritchie and Eyres will be joined by Rick Holden, Jon Hallworth, Lee Duxbury, Mike Milligan, Darren Sheridan, Tommy Wright and Tony Philliskirk.

Wright was a member of the Leicester City team which won the overall title last season. This year’s final is at the NEC, Birmingham, on September 7.

The Manchester United team includes Lee Sharpe, Denis Irwin, David May and Clayton Blackmore, while former Athletic favourite Neil Redfearn will be playing for Bolton.

The action kicks off at 7.30pm and admission costs £14 for adults and £10 for children.




ATHLETIC season-ticket holders and Boundary Blues members will be able to watch England play Hungary for free at Boundary Park tomorrow (3pm).

On production of their season tickets, they will be able to gain entry for England’s final group game in the Learning Disabilities European Championships.

England have beaten France 10-0 and Portugal 5-1 and a win or draw against Hungary will secure a semi-final appearance which will take place next Wednesday at Boundary Park, which also hosts the final tomorrow week.




OLDHAM Town kick off their pre-season campaign at home to Glossop tomorrow.

It will be a makeshift side with James Curley, Lee Deakin, Tim Buxton and Damian Schofield unavailable.

Defender D J Ogunlade is back after completing his university studies.




CHADDERTON continue their preparations for the new campaign with an away game at Huddersfield League side Marsden tomorrow.
