Sheridan still waiting

ATHLETIC boss John Sheridan is being kept on tenterhooks after his sending off at Tranmere last week.

Sheridan was despatched to the stands after an exchange of words with referee Andy Hall, but he is still waiting to learn his fate 10 days later.

The Boundary Park manager could face a touchline ban if Mr Hall, as expected, includes the dismissal in his report.

Sheridan would be hit with an FA charge — but he remains adamant that the referee acted too harshly.

Athletic players who were near the incident insist Sheridan didn’t swear, while Tranmere staff have indicated they will back him up.

Sheridan himself has said he will plead not guilty to any charge as he only asked Mr Hall to let the game flow.

Meanwhile, Athletic’s North-West derby clash at Stockport, which is scheduled to be played two weeks on Saturday (October 4), could be rearranged.

Stockport share their ground with top rugby union team Sale Sharks, who have been drawn at home in the EDF Energy Cup on the same day.

Sale don’t want to move from October 4 as they would risk losing the income from planned live television coverage.

Talks are in deadlock, however, as Athletic and Stockport are also reluctant to play on the following Sunday or the preceding Friday night. A decision is expected later this week.

Athletic are urging fans to buy tickets in advance for their trip to Hartlepool United on Saturday.

Demand is high for the allocation of 964 seats, which are priced at £20 (adults) or £10 (over-60s, under-16s and students).

Supporters should visit Boundary Park in order to guarantee a ticket as Athletic are expecting to sell out the away end.

Athletic’s reserves are at home to Bury tomorrow (2pm) in the Manchester Senior Cup. Admission is free.

ANDY RITCHIE is being linked with the manager’s post at Grimsby Town, who sacked Alan Buckley yesterday.
