STEFAN STAM is poised for a return to Athletic’s squad when they bid to protect their unbeaten League One record at Hartlepool on Saturday.

Stam, who picked up a groin strain in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game against Morecambe two weeks ago, was making his comeback in the reserves today.

The Dutchman’s recovery is welcome news for manager John Sheridan as he was a consistent performer last season, featuring in 41 consecutive matches.

He has not started a league game this term but is next in line for the central defensive positions behind Sean Gregan and Reuben Hazell.

Assuming there is no adverse reaction to his appearance in the reserves, Stam will be vying to regain his place in Athletic’s 16-man squad.

New signing Richie Byrne, who is on a one-month contract, has been providing defensive cover during Stam’s lay-off.

Striker Matt Wolfenden was also making his return from injury when Athletic played Bury in the Manchester Senior Cup this afternoon.

Wolfenden suffered a muscle strain during pre-season and was unable to shake it off for several weeks.

The 21-year-old, who featured heavily in the squad last term, will be eased back into action as Athletic are not short of attacking options.

But Wolfenden should soon join Lee Hughes, Lewis Alessandra, Chris O’Grady, Deane Smalley and Craig Davies in the battle for places up front.

JP Kalala has rejoined Athletic following his trial spell with Championship side Plymouth.

There are two new trialists at Boundary Park, both of whom are wide midfielders, and this afternoon’s reserve team was: Fleming, Lee, Thompson, Stam, Byrne, trialist, Kalala, Stephens, trialist, O’Grady, Davies. Subs: Bell, Brooke, Wolfenden, Dawson, Kilcourse.

Athletic goalkeeper Mark Crossley has been named in the League One team of the week after his performance in Saturday’s 2-0 win against MK Dons.
